My Initiation into running as a hobby

 I am an ordinary middle class engineer immigrated to USA in 1987 for higher studies and gaining experience of middle class engineer in USA. Though I many sports and Indian games for mostly fun, I am not athletic in sprit or build, nor serious on any physical activity. I am mostly a community worker interested in politics, culture and society. But I am conscious of doing some exercise as I developed blood pressure very early. But not regular in exercise regimen. I invested in various home exercise equipment and not used them. Joined gym club membership, but hardly visited them. Some how fate connected me to take up running as a regular activity after I crossed 50 years.


On 9/1/2013 Labor day, I started my hobby of running. I ran my 10K race with very little practice. I signed up as my colleague Viswa Tallapragada at Highwire.org has signed up to run half marathon influenced by his BTech classmate who is into running. The running course is relatively easily along shaded coyote creek in south San Jose area. It is organized by ClubOne sports club in Silver Creek Sports complex. I enjoyed running. So I thought why not try running half marathon.

My 50 states half marathons in USA

After running for many half marathons in northern California, I got bored and then heard about this running 50 state half marathons. That happened after I crossed 55 years, I thought let me start and finish this by my 60th year. It is an expensive time consuming goal. My first half marathon in Livermore, CA

My first 10K run experience mostly with no prior training, enthused me to try for half marathon running. I found out there is one soon called Grape Stomp in Livermore, CA about 20 miles from my home in Fremont, CA. I signed up immediately on 9/30/13. The run is on Sunday Oct 30, 2013. I started practicing run in Fremont Lake Elijabeth walking track. Fremont has one big central park with a in big lake in the middle. There is a cemented path around the lake which is 2 miles in length. One one side is lake, other side is picnic spots, greenery, playing grounds, facilities, and creek one side. It is scenic. It is a favorite walking spot for many old, middle aged, families and dogs. It has accessible places for drinking water and rest room. Few runners also practice on it. I practiced on couple of weekends.  Running around 5 times makes us run 10 miles. Each 2 mile loop run takes me about 24 minutes and five rounds takes about 2 hour.
